MLB and union agree to pay pre-1980 players' pensions (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) – Major League Baseball and the players' organization announced an commendation on weekday to attain tardy payments to players who old before 1980 but did not qualify for a pension.
Under the preceding agreement, players who old between 1947 and 1980 were exclusive suitable for benefits if they completed at small four seasons in the major league. Players who competed after 1980 become suitable as presently as they played one game.
But under the newborn deal, those strained players module now be entitled to an annual payment of up to $10,000 for at small the incoming digit years. Further payments module be discussed in the incoming ammo of collective bargaining agreements.
"We change that this was the right abstract to do for these past players who contributed to our game's unparalleled history," MLB Commissioner Bud Selig said in a statement.
Dan Foster, the honcho chief of the players' Alumni Association, also welcomed the agreement.
"Today is a period of occasion and appreciation," he said.
"The payments to these past players not exclusive pass their persona in the phylogenesis of the mettlesome but also take the men who developed the enthusiastic American pastime."
