NEW YORK (Reuters) – Longtime New royalty Yankees simulator Gene Monahan, who tended generations of players from Bobby Murcer to Derek Jeter, said on weekday he was unnoticeable at the end of the season after nearly 50 eld with the club.

Monahan, who missed conception of the 2010 Major League Baseball season patch undergoing communication for throat and neck cancer, said the sickness "was a wake-up call," and that he had decided it was instance to own a dog, a concern and maybe a pick-up truck.

"It's been a wonderful ride," Monahan, 66, told reporters before New York's mettlesome against the river City Royals at American Stadium.

Monahan joined the Yankees in 1962 during his senior assemblage of high school, serving as a bat boy and edifice meeter during spring training.

He began his athletic upbringing occupation with Class D Fort Lauderdale in 1963, was promoted two eld after to Double-A and moved to Triple-A city in 1969 before becoming nous athletic simulator for the Yankees in 1973.

Monahan is the longest-tenured nous simulator in MLB and the longest-running Yankees employee at 49 years.

Hal Steinbrenner, managing general relation of the team, issued a statement about Monahan, a fixture in the Yankees munition and clubhouse.
